Elementary students are on fire for reading as their accelerated reading scores continue to climb.

Accelerated reader is a computer based program, the students take tests online to see how well they understood the book they read.

All the kids get really excited about reading their AR books and taking the AR tests.

When 2nd grader, Mary Fisher Penn; was asked what AR points are she said “It’s a test you can take to earn points and after you get a lot of points you start to get prizes.”

Each grade keeps up with how many AR points they have throughout the year.

In the elementary right beside the library there is a big wall with how many AR points each grade has and each students name with how many AR points they individually have.

Maggie Allen, 6th grade; has the most AR points in her grade.

Allen said “My grade receives prizes when we get a certain amount of AR points.”

Allen  also said that every grade receives the same kind of prizes when they reach their goal.

Allen said the bigger the book, the more points it’s worth.

The prizes that the students get for the AR points are different, when they reach a higher amount of points the prizes get better.

The students in the elementary like Accelerated Reader because its a competition for prizes that they are interested in.

The teachers encourage all the kids in the elementary to take AR tests.

They also set goals for there classes, there goals consist of  how many points they should shoot for.

Liberian Nan James, who is head of the Elementary library and the Accelerated Reading program.

Mrs. Nan said “I love AR points, some teachers don’t like it because of how much work it is but I love it.”

Mrs. Nan also said that she thinks it’s good for the kids to have other options than just being athletic, this system gives them something to accel at if they aren’t as athletic as others.

Mrs. Nan has been in the library for 5 years and has been doing AR points since she has been here. She is really passionate about sharing books with the kids at Canton Academy and wants them all to get the chance to excel in reading.

She works so hard to keep this system going strong and doesn’t get the credit she deserves.
